The Cardinals' Rebuild and a Second Chance for Nelson Velázquez
In a move that has sparked interest among baseball enthusiasts, the St. Louis Cardinals have signed corner outfielder and designated hitter Nelson Velázquez to a minor league deal. This development comes as the team embarks on a rebuild, creating an opportunity for Velázquez to make his mark.
Velázquez, a 27-year-old right-handed batter, is eager to return to the majors after a two-season hiatus. Last year, he found himself on a journey, bouncing between teams. After being released by the Kansas City Royals in May, he proved his mettle in the Mexican League, raking over 49 games. This impressive performance earned him a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he spent the final month with their top affiliate in Indianapolis.
But here's where it gets intriguing: Velázquez's strong form continued in his second stint at Triple-A. He finished the season with a solid .284/.329/.554 batting line and five home runs in just 79 plate appearances. However, this wasn't enough to secure an MLB call-up from the Pirates.
And this is where the Cardinals step in. Velázquez has previously played for both the Cubs and Royals, showcasing his power with 14 home runs in the second half of the '23 season. While this was his most successful run in the big leagues, his overall batting average and on-base percentage haven't quite met the mark.
The Cardinals' rebuild presents an opportunity for Velázquez to prove himself. With some playing time opening up in the outfield, the team has already made moves indirectly through the Willson Contreras trade, which is expected to bring Alec Burleson to the outfield as the primary first baseman. Left fielder Lars Nootbaar could also be on the move, but the Cardinals may opt to wait until mid-season to assess his health post-heel surgeries.
Right field seems to be up for grabs, with former top prospect Jordan Walker set for another chance. Designated hitter is a bit more competitive, with Iván Herrera likely to get the majority of playing time when not catching.
Velázquez shares some similarities with Walker and prospect Joshua Baez as right-handed power hitters. However, the Cardinals are unlikely to push him into the starting lineup over younger players who could be key contributors in the future. As their only non-roster outfielder with MLB experience, Velázquez is expected to start the season at Triple-A Memphis.
