Blair Chapman, SEEK senior economist, commented on the broader trend, noting the usual slowdown in hiring during the festive season. However, the 2025 decline was more significant than past years. The legal industry took the biggest hit with a 3.4% drop in job postings, followed by retail and consumer products, and insurance.
And this is where it gets controversial: Despite the overall downward trend, HR and recruitment, along with sports and recreation, and consulting and strategy, managed to swim against the tide. Adding to the intrigue, candidate activity also took a dip in November, with applications per job ad decreasing by 0.3%. This decline, though slight, is a notable shift from the usual end-of-year hiring frenzy.
