A Golfing Comeback Story: Patrick Reed's Return to the PGA TOUR
Get ready for an exciting chapter in the world of professional golf! Patrick Reed, a nine-time PGA TOUR winner, is making a bold move to reclaim his place on the TOUR, aiming for a comeback in the 2027 season. But here's where it gets intriguing: his journey back is filled with unique challenges and opportunities.
Reed, known for his 2018 Masters victory, has been away from the TOUR since an unauthorized event in August 2025. However, his resignation from the TOUR prior to any violations means he can return as a non-member in August 2026, provided he plays by the rules.
At that point, he'll be eligible for FedExCup Fall events and can secure his spot through sponsor exemptions or open qualifying. But the real twist comes in 2027, where he plans to return as a past champion member, playing in the highest eligibility category he achieves on the DP World Tour, where he currently ranks second.
"I'm thrilled to announce my return to the PGA TOUR for the 2027 season," Reed stated. "I'm eager to compete and continue my journey as an Honorary Lifetime Member on the DP World Tour."
However, there's a catch. Reed's reinstatement means he won't be part of the Player Equity Program until 2030, a decision made by TOUR officials to ensure a fair and consistent process for returning members.
"We believe this financial consequence is justified," said Tyler Dennis and Jason Gore, TOUR executives. "Our focus remains on strengthening the TOUR and welcoming back players who wish to return."
And this is the part most people miss: Reed didn't qualify for the Returning Member Program, established by TOUR CEO Brian Rolapp, which is specifically for major championship winners since 2022. While Brooks Koepka is expected to be the sole returnee via this program, Reed's path is unique.
His exempt status from prior TOUR victories won't apply this year as a non-member, but his status could earn him a spot on the Presidents Cup team in September. With his most recent TOUR win at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open, Reed's comeback story is one to watch.
