Sauna Boom at Killiney & Inchicore: What This Means for Dublin’s Wellness Scene (2026)

A heated debate is brewing in Dublin, Ireland, as a company called Lidoc Experiences aims to keep its saunas at Killiney Beach and Inchicore. But here's where it gets controversial: these saunas are not explicitly mentioned in the permitted land uses for the area.

Lidoc Experiences has submitted two retention applications, one to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for the Killiney Beach sauna, and another to Dublin City Council for the Inchicore sauna. Both locations have received a surprising amount of local support, with 45 submissions backing the retention of these facilities.

The company, which operates eight sites across Ireland, including Cork, Meath, and Sligo, wants to retain its Killiney Beach sauna, known as 'The Hot Box Sauna', which is located near a mobile coffee van called 'Fred & Nancy's Killiney'. This sauna boasts two saunas, changing rooms, a reception area, and outdoor showers, all nestled on a wooden deck.

Now, here's the part most people miss: a planning report by Kevin Hughes of Hughes Development and Planning Consultants (HDPC) argues that saunas fall under the category of 'community facility' and 'marine leisure facility', even though they are not directly mentioned in the zoning regulations. Hughes believes that these saunas actively contribute to the physical and mental well-being of the local community, residents, and tourists, aligning with the council's strategy for healthy placemaking.

The report further states that saunas provide a unique recreational experience with numerous health benefits, similar to low- to moderate-intensity exercise. Hughes highlights the positive impact of sauna use on pain relief, mental health, cardiovascular health, respiratory issues, and even suggests a potential link to a reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

So, the question arises: should these saunas be allowed to stay, even though they are not explicitly mentioned in the land use regulations? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below and let's spark a friendly debate!
