Imagine a scenario where students face the threat of suspension simply because their vaccine records are incomplete. It's a controversial issue, and one that Grey Bruce Public Health is tackling head-on.
The organization is hosting vaccine clinics throughout March, including during the school break, to ensure students stay up to date with their immunizations. This initiative is part of a larger effort under Ontario's Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), which mandates that students have current immunization records unless they have a valid exemption.
In a recent development, approximately 900 students received suspension notices due to incomplete records or overdue immunizations. However, Grey Bruce Public Health has made significant progress, achieving a 67% reduction in the number of students at risk of suspension since their outreach efforts began last summer.
"Our primary goal is to support students who need to update their immunization records," explains Monica Blair, Program Manager of Vaccine Preventable Diseases. "Having accurate records ensures students comply with the law and avoid the risk of suspension. It also provides peace of mind for families in the event of an outbreak."
Parents and guardians are encouraged to check their child's immunization records using the online ICON tool available on the Public Health website. For added convenience, a full calendar of community vaccine clinics is also posted on the Grey Bruce Public Health website (https://www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca/).
