Most Americans feel the Trump administration has not clearly explained the U.S.'s goals in the conflict with Iran, according to a CBS News poll. This lack of clarity is linked to public support for the administration's actions. The longer Americans believe the conflict will last, the more they disapprove. Half the country believes it'll be months, or even years, before it's over. When people don't think the administration has explained its goals, they tend to think the conflict will be longer or are uncertain about its duration. Currently, more Americans feel the military action will make the U.S. less safe than more safe. Americans have varying opinions about the administration's goals, with those who believe the goal is to stop nuclear weapons, stop terrorism, or help the Iranian people generally supporting the action. However, some also voice a more cynical view, suggesting it's for political gain in the U.S. Overall, most Americans disapprove. The president's Republican and MAGA supporters, however, are strongly in favor of the action, believing it makes the U.S. more safe. This survey recontacted Americans who were initially interviewed for a poll conducted before the start of airstrikes. It found that more people approved of military action to prevent nuclear weapons before the airstrikes began compared to after. The reason for this shift is that those who disapproved since believe the administration hasn't explained its goals and predict a longer conflict. Two-thirds of Americans say the administration should get approval from Congress for further military action, though Republicans disagree, echoing their stance on U.S. military action in Venezuela. This CBS News/YouGov survey, conducted March 2-3, 2026, is based on a nationally representative sample of 1,399 U.S. adults recontacted after the start of U.S. military action against Iran, following an initial survey conducted before the action using a nationally representative sample of 2,264 U.S. adults.
